Montreal mixes modernity and history through its two distinct components: Downtown and Old Montreal. Old Montreal offers a quainter feel with its charming cobblestoned streets and longstanding art scene — it’s almost like a blast from the past nestled within the modern metropolis. The historic district boasts a wealth of art galleries from the contemporary art collections at the PHI centre, to First Nations, Métis and Inuit exhibitions at Sacred Fire Productions Cultural Space, your eyes can upon some of the most incredible art the city has to offer as you study English or French in Montreal.

Downtown Montreal contains the entertainment district locally known as the Quartier des Spectacles, known for hosting the popular annual Just for Laughs comedy event and other exciting music or entertainment gigs throughout the year. The downtown area has most of the city’s gourmand hotspots including fine dining and food trucks alike, but if you’re feeling a bit more like a French-Canadian comfort-food classic, there’s plenty of poutineries scattered across Montreal. And did you know Montreal has an extensive underground pedestrian network with links to metro stations lined with shops and food halls to shield you from the freezing cold or blazing hot temperatures of peak seasons.

Montreal is the second largest Francophone city in the world following Paris. Although Montreal sits in Canada’s only officially unilingually French province, Montreal itself is a multilingual hub known for its cultural diversity. Montreal has an extensive history spanning far before Europeans came to North America. Situated on unceded Kanien’kehá:ka territory, Tiohtià:ke — Montreal is home to multiple First Nations communities such as the Kanien’kehá:ka, Atikamekw and Anishinaabe. Galleries, Boutiques and exhibitions can be found throughout the city displaying traditional craftsmanship and art created by indigenous artists and creatives throughout the city.
